Karakorum is one of Mongolia's biggest tourist destinations. This was Genghis Khan's fabled city, and the center of his huge empire. Karakorum was built in 1220 in the Orkhon Valley, known as the crossroads of the Silk Road. Genghis Khan then transferred the administrative center of the Mongol Empire to what is now called Bejing, China. Karakorum was razed so the building materials could be used to build the heavy walls of Mongolia's first Buddhist Monertary Inside the walls.
